Honduras Opens Embassy in New Delhi, Marking Stronger India-Ties

New Delhi, May 2025 — The Foreign Minister of Honduras, Enrique Reina, has arrived in India’s capital to formally inaugurate the newly established Embassy of Honduras in New Delhi — a move hailed as a key moment in growing bilateral relations between the two nations.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed the visit warmly. In a public statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described it as a “milestone” in the friendly and evolving relationship between India and Honduras

Strengthening Diplomatic Footprints

The inauguration of Honduras’ diplomatic mission in New Delhi signifies a step forward in expanding Honduras’ engagement with South Asia and reflects India’s own outreach to Latin American nations.

India and Honduras have long enjoyed cordial ties, with cooperation in areas such as trade, development assistance, healthcare, and multilateral support. Honduras has historically backed India on various global platforms, including the United Nations.

Previous High-Level Engagements

In May 2022, Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India, conducted an official visit to Honduras. During her trip, she met with President Xiomara Castro and high-ranking officials from the Honduran foreign ministry. The meetings focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as culture, commerce, and international coordination.

Trade and Development Ties

Bilateral trade between India and Honduras reached nearly USD 289 million in 2022–23, driven primarily by India’s exports. Top Indian exports to Honduras include:

  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Cotton yarn and textiles

  • Engineering goods

  • Two- and three-wheelers

  • Iron, steel, and auto components

  • Electrical equipment

Honduras continues to be a growing market for Indian products, especially in the healthcare and industrial machinery sectors.

Development Assistance

India’s partnership with Honduras extends beyond commerce. India has offered medical and financial support during several humanitarian crises in Honduras. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India provided essential medicines and supplies. Previously, in the aftermath of natural disasters, India extended both monetary and material aid — notably in 1998 and again in 2005.

A Growing South-South Bond

The establishment of Honduras’ embassy in India reflects a wider trend of deeper South-South cooperation and growing interest in mutual partnerships between Latin America and South Asia. Both nations are expected to continue exploring opportunities in trade, technology, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
